Sun beating down on her back and dressed in her usual faded green t shirt and jeans, Galena slowly moved through the shallow water, careful not to get any of it on her rolled up jeans as she moved, a task easier said than done given the constant series of waves coming in from off of the blue expanse. She only had two pairs, and they had already lasted her this long despite the rough terrain and wear she routinely put them through - the last thing she needed now was for them to get sea water on them. It wouldn't be a problem at first, but she'd long since learned that nothing ruined fabric like sea salt after the years living in the coastal town of Petalburg, and she had no desire to have to spend money on another pair. Standing still once more to avoid getting splashed by another incoming wave, Galena began moving again once it passed her. Truth be told it wasn't all bad - there hadn't been any storms for weeks, which meant the water was as calm as it would ever be, and her pokemon at least got to get out of their balls and exercise a bit, although Haunter looked ludicrously out of place above the crystal blue water and sunshine as her followed behind her, hovering over the waves.
While Beedrill was busy wandering around the beach inspecting various bits of trash and flotsam washed ashore by the tide, Grovyle anxiously waited by the water's edge, his own eyes tracking Galena and Haunter as they moved. Despite his own desire to be out next to Galena in case she encountered what they were looking for, the Wood Gecko was ill suited for swimming, and was short enough that he'd easily be up to his chest had he followed his trainer out - even the smallest wave would swamp him, and his maneuverability would have been severely crippled, so he'd remained on shore.
Left eye twitching almost imperceptively, Galena began to get annoyed - while she'd know the pokemon she was searching for was by no means common in the area, she'd already been looking for hours under the blistering sun. In all honesty, she knew that she had little right to complain - the pokemon she was searching for was a well known native of Kanto, and she'd had years worth of opportunities to try and catch one before leaving, a lesson she'd take to heart the next time she went looking for a specific species of pokemon.

In recent weeks the weather had been decent. The constants storms that plagued this end of the region had subsided and the weather was calm. Almost good you could say. The sea was flat only with small waves lapping the shores and the water had a hint of warmth from the sun that shone in a cloudless sky.
The calmer weather had brought the native pokemon back into shore from where they had sought deeper waters to escape the winds and rough seas. This one particular pokemon had floated back in on the gentle waves, settling on the shore line and had embedded himself on the sand. As the water moved with the tide, it brought layers of sand with it, which eventually covered him so he was invisible to the eye and for a few hours at least, he was able to lie in the warm water in peace.
But now he could hear a faint rumbling, as if someone was coming in his direction. He didn't have enough time to move before it was upon him and as she took another step, Galena's foot landed right on top of the pokemon. He squealed in pain, wriggling free from the sand and leapt almost a foot in the air which was quite a feat for the small pokemon. He landed on the sand with a small thud, peering with eyes narrowed into a glare at the young woman from its shell.

That's it. I've been out here wading in the water for hours already, and haven't found anything, much less the pokemon I've been looking for. This trip's a bust. Galena thought, again irritated with both her lack of success as well as for passing up the chance to catch one where they'd been common before deciding to leave Kanto for the region she was currently in. Changing direction, Galena began moving towards the shoreline, already running over the next places she'd attempt to look for one. Shellder were tough, but they weren't Magikarp - unlike they later, they much preferred salt water and as such were rarely if ever found inland, making this place her first spot attempting to look for one. As it was the only other significant body of water she'd heard of since arriving from Kanto was near Summer Town, and was fresh water, leaving her at a loss of where to look next. Ironically enough it was at this point that Galena stepped out of the water and onto the damp sand where the beach and sea met, startling the buried Shellder as Grovyle and Beedrill moved over to join her. Somewhat startled herself by the sudden movement and moving back a foot or so into the edge of the water, Galena merely stared for a few seconds before grinning at the turn of events - she'd known that Shellder would bury themselves, but she'd been led to believe that they were still somewhat noticable. Still, this was as much as she could have hoped for - even better was that the pokemon's mobility was severely crippled on the beach without any water to inhale and expel for propulsion, plus she was in between it and its escape route.
Moving back another inch, Galena glanced over at Haunter and nodded, the Ghost pokemon taking the hint and moving forward to take on the Shellder. While he was her newest pokemon relatively speaking, Haunter still understood how this was supposed to work, especially since Galena had laid out the game plan with him before even attempting to find their target. Looking the Shellder in the eyes, Haunter's own eyes taking on a slight reddish glow as he used Hypnosis.

Having been disturbed from its peaceful slumber, the Shelder was in no mood for going out without a fight. He was hampered by the fact he was now in the sand without a decent source of propulsion but this little pokemon was a clever one and determined. The Haunter floated over, looming in the air ready to attack. He was not afraid of the ghost type, but it hampered his spirits a little to know that he could no physically hit the pokemon.
The eyes of the ghost began to glow red but the Shelder was just a little bit quicker, slamming his shell shut around him in a withdrawal defence. It would have no affect if it couldn't reach him. Biding his time for a moment or two, the Shelder sat silent and still before rocking forward, so the opening of the shell faced the ground. In a split second, he was propelled into the air. Seeking out the moisture within his shell, he froze it and formed it into a thin icicle shape, which he rapidly forced out of the shell to send him into the air. When he was level with the Haunter in the air, several more icicle spears shot out from the shell towards the ghost, but whether they would hit or not was another question.
Another question, now that he thought about it, was how was he going to land?

Seeing the Shellder's shell close, Haunter rushed forwards to deal another blow on the offchance it was still awake and just using Withdraw, only to reach the spot just as it propelled itself straight upwards and into the air with an improvised Icicle Spear.
Impressive tactic. Despite the difference in experience this one won't go down easy. Galena thought, momentarily admiring the unconventional tactic. Her luck had definately turned for the better - on top of finally finding the pokemon she'd been searching the beach for hours for, it was obviously experienced as well, and would be worth every ounce of effort needed to catch it.
"Haunter, keep it here - don't give it a chance to run."
Haunter, understanding perfectly, sank downwards to phase into the ground to avoid Shellder's attack, reemerging several feet to the side to glare at the Shellder as it fell, his eyes now tinged purple as he used Mean Look in an attempt to stun it and prevent it from fleeing the battlefield.

The icicle spears had missed, now Shelder had to contend with the fall back to earth. The few seconds of free fall felt like a lifetime and he done is best to twist his small body in the air so he didn't cause any damage to his hinge as he landed. Luckily, he landed with a small thud on the bottom of his shell. A dull ache spread across his shell, the impact causing some minor damage but the soft sand shifted underneath his weight, helping to break the fall.
Unfortunately, the mean look hit him square on as he fell, and with no chance to dodge it, he remained paralysed in the sand after he landed. In his mind he was moving, but physically he was going no where as was stuck in the sand. With little else he could do, he looked up to face the Haunter, sending a blast of super sonic rays rippling through the air. He had no physical moves capable of hitting him and so decided his best bet for now was try and confuse the ghost type, hoping it would inflict damage on itself and give the shell pokemon a few moments to recuperate and get some feeling back before he could find some way to attack again.

Shellder, now afflicted by Mean Look, was momentarily stunned and prevented from leaving the fight. While Haunter was sorely tempted to rush in for the game ending move he held back, his cautious nature preventing him from rushing in - a mistake, as it would turn out. As the Shellder landed facing Haunter it shell popped open, a high pitched sound emanating from the dark recesses as the Water type used Supersonic in an attempt to buy itself time to recover. Realizing the mistake he had made but too late to correct it, Haunter used his superior speed to instead launch a counter attack, counting on the fact that Shellder's shell would need to remain open to keep using Supersonic. Eyes again glowing red, Haunter used Hypnosis just as the Supersonic hit him.
Galena, mildly concerned, considered switching Haunter out for Beedrill or Grovyle who were now just behind her before deciding to let him keep fighting. After all, if the Hypnosis attack was successful Haunter would still have a way to recover.

At a disadvantage from the start, Shelder kept pushing on, blasting out the supersonic waves while his shell remained open, taking the full blast of the hypnosis. He knew there was little chance of landing an attack on the Haunter so he had to make the most of what he had and that was his supersonic. The waves would have been too weak had he not kept attacking. That came at a price and he felt his eyes growing heavy, flickering before they finally closed.
As he drifted into a sleep, the supersonic rays began to fade out until they stopped entirely. With the adrenaline levels dropping now he was fast asleep, the damage he had sustained from the fall and the energy he had expended attacking began to creep up on him and when or if he woke up, it was certainly going to be a harder slog to make it through the rest of the battle.
ooc. sorry, it's short. he's asleep.

Again pleased with the result, Galena recalled Haunter to his pokeball, returning the ball to her belt before bringing an arm up and waving it forward once, signalling Beedrill to take up Haunter's place in the fight. Having landed to watch, Beedrill jumped off of the ground, wings buzzing and fading into a blur as he flew forward to hover in front of Galena slightly to the side, his forearms up and ready for combat.
That was only a precaution on Galena's part, though. As it was she doubted that the Shellder was going anywhere - while it hadn't taken any actual attacks, the thing was fast asleep and likely fatigued to begin with from fighting out of his element against a stronger opponent. Pulling an empty pokeball from her pocket, Galena enlarged it and threw it at the sleeping Shellder with practiced ease. She hoped this first ball would catch it - while she was perfectly willing to do it if needed to ensure the capture, she didn't like the idea of ordering Beedrill to attack a sleeping opponent, and she was guessing the wasp wouldn't like it either.
Word count for Haunter: 709 exp.

The shelder was still trapped in a deep slumber. As much as he could try to will himself out of his dream, his eyes still remained closed and his body refused to move. He was trapped, helpless. He thought he felt something hit him, but he couldnt be sure whether it was real or he was just dreaming it. The pokeball collided with the shelder, engulfing him in a flash of red light. The ball shook in the same once. The rock was slow, filled with tension. Then a second roll. After the third, the ball came to rest within the sand.
Congratulations! Shelder was caught!
From beneath the waves, a shiny red 'eye' peered at the pair. Watching his friend battle and get captured spurred him into life and he leapt from the water. "Sssttaaaarrrr-yyyuuuuu!" he called in a battle cry. He wouldnt suffer like his friend. He wasn't plagued by the inability to move like the Shelder. He could move, and he could move fast.

As the pokeball came to rest with Shellder inside, Beedrill lowered itself to the ground, wings instantly stopping as its two hind legs touched the ground. Galena, grinning slightly at the smooth capture, calmly walked past the Bug pokemon before leaning over to pick up the pokeball, turning it over a bit in her hand as she inspected it. As it was the battle couldn't have gone any better - neither Haunter nor Shellder took any damaging hits, and the Confusion wore off from Haunter the instant he'd been recalled. Even better was that the target Shellder was merely asleep, and would likely wake up only a few minutes after being called out from his new pokeball. Still smiling to herself, Galena clipped the new ball to her belt, the first one to take a position on her left side.
While Beedrill was observing both Galena and the pokeball, too focused to notice any external stimuli behind it or too far to the sides, Grovyle was perfectly alert and ready for combat and still on edge after considering the possibility that Galena might've called him up to fight rather than Beedrill. Catching the glimpse of orange with the eye one his side facing the ocean, Grovyle darted forward in a green blur to place himself between Galena and the offending Staryu, arms already up in a guard position and ready to either attack or defend. Galena, slightly surprised herself and her attention darting to Beedrill's angry buzzing in response to the sudden intrusion before noticing the attacker, grinned again. She'd already caught the Shellder, but why not try for another while she was there?

Staryu was in no mood to hang around and wasted no time waiting for the trainer or the rest of her team to attack. For now, his target was the Grovyle. He leapt from the water, beginning to spin in the air. Picking up speed, he thrust himself forward in a rapid spin attack, his spinning body flying full throttle at the grass type. He showed no signs of slowing down and this was only the beginning. There was plenty more where that came from. There was a determination to avenge his fallen comrade.
ooc. sorry its so short, bit busy today.

Not waiting for a command from Galena that he knew wouldn't come, Grovyle's strong legs launched the mid sized Grass pokemon straight at his opponent the instant it made its own move, flying at him with a Rapid Spin attack. While he would have liked nothing more than to latch on to his opponent and drain it dry of stamina with Mega Drain, that particular tactic wasn't practical as long as the Staryu was spinning - he would need to slow it down, ideally stopping the rotations altogether, which was easier said than done. Arms still up in front of him from before, the leaves on his arms hardened and began glowing a neon green as he used Leaf Blade, intending to collide with Staryu in mid air with the powerful Grass attack.

Staryu came spinning towards the grass type. There was no way for him to move of his course, and not that he particularly wanted to as he was hellbent on proving he was just as strong, in time to avoid the leaf blades. He collided with the glowing green swipes which knocked him back. He went spinning around ten feet from the Grovyle, managing to find his footing just in time to slide across the grass. Shaking himself off, he flicked back into the standing position, two points on contact with the ground. Leaning his weight backwards, then thrusting it forward, a jet of water exploded from the top point directing at the lizard pokemon.

Galena watched as Grovyle and Staryu collided in mid air, the Grass pokemon's Leaf Blade attack landing cleanly on the Water type with Grovyle taking minor damage from the Rapid Spin attack before deftly rebounding off of his opponent and landing on his feet in the soft sand, disappearing into thin air and reappearing directly behind the Staryu just as it regained its footing in time to fire a blast of water where Grovyle had been mere fractions of a second ago. Staryu may have been astonishingly fast on land for a water type, but few pokemon were as fast as a Grovyle using Quick Attack. While their small size made them relatively easy to knock around if you did manage to land a hit, that same size and agility almost always meant they'd land on their feet ready to dodge again - not that Grovyle intended to do so. Lunging forward towards Staryu from behind, the Wood Gecko pokemon reached forward with the intent to glue himself to Staryu's back.
