It was quiet, but that was just how Kay liked it.
Too bad a certain fossil Pokémon of his didn't seem to share the same sentiment.
"Ah! Aerodactyl, please!" the young gym leader groaned as Aerodactyl dove downwards again, shrieking and grazing his jaw over the viridian treetops, and sending shredded leaves and snapped twigs tumbling to the ground. A few birds took to the air in fright at the sudden disturbance, their figures like little dark dots scattering across the gloomy sky.
Obviously pleased with the racket he was stirring up, Aerodactyl let out a loud squawk that sounded vaguely like a laugh, and then felt a human hand rapping him sharply between the ears. "Stop that," Kay reprimanded from his position on the Pokémon's lumpy back, and Cubone, who was hanging off of his "mommy's" shoulder, chirped in agreement. "Behave yourself for once, you." Aerodactyl spat derisively at the scolding and further expressed his displeasure by abruptly swerving to the side, nearly throwing his unsuspecting trainer and his Cubone off his back and into the crystal-clear lake they were now flying over.
Once the two regained their balance, Kay quirked a brow at this sudden act of rebellion. "Well now... you're impossible, you know that?" he sighed, pushing his carrier's shoulder to signify "down" and guiding him towards the dirt trail wrapping around the lake - "Crystal Lake Path" they called it. A rather unimaginative name, he thought, but straightforward.
Aerodactyl hesitated for a brief second, and Kay guessed that he had half a mind to try and throw him in the water again. However, his Pokémon did no such thing - instead, he decided it would be an amusing alternative to flip over and dump Kay and Cubone roughly onto the path.
"I suppose that's his way of having fun when he has no one to battle," the eighteen-year-old mumbled, spitting out a mouthful of dirt and gingerly rubbing the spot where his side had impacted the ground, while Aerodactyl soared in delighted circles above them. Kay hastily withdrew his empty Pokéball from his pocket and directed the red beam skyward, as Cubone wandered down the path with an air of childish curiosity, completely ignoring the chaos happening behind him.
"Enough, Aerodactyl - get back in there - honestly, I swear, you all act like children sometimes."

Wild Pokemon Appeared! Level 9, Male. Attacks: Low Kick, Leer, Focus Energy. The young machop was known to have a child-like wandering. He loved to walk around and pick at the flowers, observing the bees that collected pollen. A sort of naturalist pokemon if you needed to label what exactly the Machop was. He was busy creating a bouquet for his friends before he heard ruffling foot steps. His eyes spotted the Cubone who was wandering into his territory.
”Can I help you? You are stepping on my begonias. One more step and I will have to leave my pacifist ways and show you not to go where you do not belong.” that was a quick change of personality. Protecting his beloved flowers was something he would do no matter what, everything deserved a chance to grow.

Cubone frowned and turned his head to stare at the Machop speaking to him. "Begowha? Pafiss?" This Pokémon sure was using a lot of big words. Was it because it looked like a human like Kay? No, but Quagsire back at the gym used big words too, and she didn't look anything like this Pokémon, except maybe for the fact that they were both blue.
Of course, since Cubone couldn't figure out that the Machop was in fact threatening him, he kept on walking closer, thinking that maybe he could make friends with this strange Pokémon and ask him to explain what he meant. It never occurred to him to look down and see that the flowers he was walking all over were being smushed and ripped apart under his weight.
Meanwhile, Kay had successfully managed to hit his ridiculously speedy Aerodactyl with the beam of the Pokéball, and breathed a sigh of relief. Now that that was taken care of, he and Cubone were free to... wait. Where was Cubone?
The answer to that question became apparent within about five seconds of scanning the area, and Kay blinked in surprise when he saw his young Ground-type walking towards, and evidently talking with, another Pokémon. A Machop.
Oh no. Please don't let him be beaten up now, he thought as he hurried over.

The vein in the Machop’s neck was enlarging at every step the Cubone took; he was getting pissed off quite quickly. ”I asked you nicely to not step on my flowers and what do you do? Step on the flowers. It took me forever to get them to bloom.” his voice lowered as the muscles on his body began to tense up growing in size slightly. The Cubone was now about to get the fight of his life.
The Machop kicked at the Cubone with a Low Kick trying to throw off its balance. The machop then noticed a trainer running over to him, he was a bit dumb-founded but he focused on the battle at hand. He would not get distracted.

"Flowers?" Cubone repeated. Now that was a word he actually knew the meaning of, and he glanced down. "... Oh!" Understanding finally dawned on him, but at precisely the wrong moment; the Machop, quite evidently pissed off at the demise of his flowers, was already launching at him with an attack.
The swift and unexpected Low Kick knocked Cubone off his feet and threw him onto his stomach for the second time that day, and he couldn't help but whine about this. "Meanie! That's two times already, you meanie meanie meanie-"
"Cubone! Calm down!" Even though as a human Kay couldn't understand a thing the Pokémon were saying, he had been around Cubone long enough to recognise an impending tantrum and quickly interrupted before it could get out of hand. As the Ground-type fell silent and settled for displeased pout, Kay's analytical mind was already going through their options.
Running away was definitely out of the question; it would be counterproductive, and even if Cubone couldn't fight off this Machop, he had a very battle-happy backup Pokémon who would gladly agree to finish the job. He doubted that Cubone would be fast enough to stand up and get in a Bone Club before the Machop could react, since it far outmatched him in speed and would most likely just dodge out of the way. No, taking it slowly and going on the defensive would probably be the best solution at the moment, and the most familiar tactic for him; his type specialty weren't exactly renowned for their speed.
Not that they had much choice, given Cubone's rather diminutive moveset.
"Growl, and keep low when you get up," he said, speaking the command at a normal volume rather than barbarically yelling it like most trainers did. Apparently Cubone interpreted "Growl" as "bawling at the foe at the top of your lungs" and did exactly that, while shifting from being sprawled out on the ground to an awkward crouching position.

If the Machop hadn’t been so angry at his opponent, he might’ve actually called him friend. They were quite similar, or rather; Machop would’ve found the Cubone as a sort of comic relief. This was not the case now though; the fighting pokemon would continue to fight for his poor demolished flowers hanging at the bottom of this Cubone’s foot. The growl attack was cute and did do its job but it was such a shame seeing a pokemon acting so un-valiant for lack of a better word.
The Machop decided not to attack the Cubone. ”You. I will not fight you if you don’t attack back. We are strong pokemon that need to back each other up. Stand and be bold.” the machop was such a chivalrous being.

To his immense surprise, the beating-up that Kay was expecting never came. Cubone himself seemed to realise this as well, even with his ridiculous level of naïvety. "Yah! Stand and be bold!" he repeated, springing up and bonking himself on the forehead with his ever-present bone club. For any other Pokémon, this may have well knocked them unconscious, but Cubone's skull helmet protected him from even getting fazed by the impact.
Sighing, Kay put a hand to his forehead and shook his head, though he was more amazed than impatient at his Cubone's rapid change in disposition. "Please stop that," he said as Cubone turned to look at him, "because evidently this Machop isn't very happy with you." Unless glaring and snapping at others were Machops' way of being friendly, but he highly doubted that.
Now seemed to be an opportune time to attack, since the Machop appeared to have let down its guard for whatever reason. "Bone Club, and try to aim for the face," Kay commanded, the weakest spot he could think of, since he knew the rest of its body was made up entirely of pure muscle and would be difficult to incapacitate. Even if the Machop tripped Cubone again, it would be less unexpected this time around and hopefully Cubone would retain his sense and be able to retaliate.
... That is, if he even attacked at all in the first place.
For some reason, Cubone seemed rather hesitant to obey his trainer's order and simply looked back and forth between Kay and the Machop. Part of the reason he didn't move was because he was reluctant to step anywhere and risk inducing the Fighting-type's rage again; he was smart enough to learn from his mistakes. "Kay is telling me to attack you," Cubone informed the Machop quite plainly, giving him a small half-shrug, "but I don't know. Can't we be frieeeends?"

The Machop was usually actually was able to gain his composure, he was a friendly sort of pokemon by nature and because of that he smiled at the Cubone's generosity. The quickest change of heart ever,"Friends? Sure. Sorry, my flowers are my life I could never leave them. I'd love to come and travel with you but this is my life." the Machop took a breath before continuing, "I have a present for you. Promise to come back later in your travels? the Machop was eager and ran behind a bushes before grabbing the gift.
He returned with a large box with a Tm inside of it was the TM87 (Swagger), he handed it to the Cubone.
"Sorry about that. I need to go though and take care of my gardenias but come back later. promise!" with that the Machop was gone.

The Machop talked and moved so quickly that Cubone barely had a chance to react, let alone say something in response. Only when the strange box was thrust insistently in his hands and the Machop skipped off to tend to his flowers some more did Cubone finally respond. "Oh... okaaay!" he called out at the Fighting-type's departing back. "See you later, new friend!" He paused. "Oh wait, I don't know your name..."
Perplexed by this sudden turn of events, Kay watched the Machop flee and then knelt down next to Cubone, gently taking the box out of his hands and prying the lid open. "A... a TM?" he said blankly, blinking down at the shiny white disc that was nestled inside and then looking up at the spot where the wild Pokémon had disappeared from. "A gift from him, I'm presuming..."
"Gift! Gift!" Cubone repeated happily, bouncing up and down on the spot. "Because that Pokémon is my friend!"
His trainer smiled and wordlessly reached out to pat Cubone on his ashen skull helmet; it was amazing the amount of innocence and optimism and joy that childhood could bring. Kay had been so busy training and taking care of his gym for the past few months that he had nearly forgotten that... maybe it was about time he just relaxed and took a break from all the chaos and pressures of adulthood.
"... Come on Cubone. Let's go play."
"Okaaay!"
