Appearance: At first glance, you might be a little bit confused when you look at Nic. You might tilt your head to the side and gawk. Does he have two different colored eyes? Is one yellow, and the other red? Yes, and yes. Nic has heterochromia, which means that his eyes are two different colors. Nic hardly notices it, now that he is older and has gotten used to it, however on certain days when hormones are acting up, Nic will wear an eye patch over one of the eyes. This however typically draws even more attention as people assume that he is just some kind of weird pirate.

Aside from his eyes, Nic has dirty blonde colored hair that sometimes looks like a light blonde, and other times seems to be a soft brunette, all depending on the light of course. He has pretty light skin, not fair skin, as he does tan quite well, however he does not like to be in the sun if he doesn’t have to. Nic is a fairly tall young man, very thin, very lanky; however, small bouts of muscle are growing in his arms, and his torso. His shoulders are also broadening.

Nic has a rather odd taste in clothing as he likes to trade off between typical asian garb, and modern clothing. He typically can be seen wearing golds, oranges, reds, blues, and teals.
Personality: The best possible way to describe Nic’s personality would be to say that he is young. Being young, Nic is very naïve, a bit reckless, outgoing and extremely optimistic in thought. Nic isn’t brilliant or anything, he simply got by in school as an average student, however he is a rather crafty and has a tendency to scheme and plot. Nic is very passive to say the least; he could care less what you say to his face and is too absent minded to pay attention. He is a bit of a klutz due to his ever growing and changing body, and can bungle simple tasks, however he means well. Nic is, in a nutshell the typical teenage boy; hormones giddy, and eyes averted from the textbooks, to energetic to read along with the rest of the group.

Pokemon: A Level 5 Ghastly, named Boo
History: Nic was born in a rather typical environment. He had a mother, a father, and an older brother. Life for them was very simple. In Lavender Town, there was never too much to do. It was a safe world free of the various worries of Team Rocket and other villainous organization, compared to the surrounding region. It seemed that no one was interested in a depressing little funeral town, so the simple two bedroom, two bath, apartment they inhabited was lonely more times than not.

Nic’s life was devoid of activity as a child, since he had few friends to play with, most living in the neighboring towns. His own brother had been seven years older than he, his brother having been born from his father’s previous marriage. Their daily interaction included not much more than sideways glances and formalities. It seemed that when they tried to bond, the tension that built up between them caused the experiences to become taxing on their relationship, rather than fostering it, there for they simply avoided each other.

Nic was never really happy with his father, as he was always away on business trips, or putting in overtime time at his law firm. Both Nic and his brother speculated that he had been having affairs off and on for quite some time. There wasn’t any decent reason to assume this, because as it turned out he was just a workaholic, trying to save a dying law firm with his sweat and hard work. His father did love both of his children very much, he was just so busy worrying that the stress marks hid his hearty smiles.

Spending most of his time in the kitchen with his mother, Nic grew to love her. She was the kindest soul in the whole town. She always has a smile on her face, and her eyes were consistently cheery. There was always a sparkle of life about her even in the most droll of times. She was how he was able to survive most of his years in Lavender Town, instead of fading into the rest of the town. She preserved his natural curiosity and resilience with embellished stories of monsters, soldiers, and heroes.

Most of the people in Lavender Town had a fetish for ghosts. It must have been something in the water that fascinated everyone with phantasms and various household poltergeists. Nic was no different. He found himself rummaging through attics searching in a hopeless search for lost souls, and consulting bibliophiles about their collections, to see if they had any books regarding specters and the like. Much to his chagrin he found that ghosts were nothing like the way horror stories portrayed them. They were mostly just tired spirits whose hearts sought asylum in the afterlife.

At the age of ten, it is customary to award a child with their first pokemon, in the hopes that they will take to that pokemon and become a world class trainer, breeder, or coordinator. Nic in particular was given a Ghastly by his father, which Nic acted completely indifferently towards. Despite his father’s encouragement, Nic never wanted to be a trainer, ore a breeder, or even a coordinator. There was nothing about any of those professions that appealed to him. So the Ghastly would simply follow Nic around, and spook the late night travelers, when Nicolaes slept.

As Nic finished out school he had begun to grow closer with his Ghastly, which he named Boo. The two weren’t inseparable; they had only just begun to become friends. In the midst of this, Nic found himself at a crossroads. He could choose to go on to a senior school, or he could go out on an adventure. Going to senior school meant being shipped off to Sinnoh and spending the next four years in another boring academy with a colorless myriad of stiff necks, whom Nic had already seen plenty of. Going on his own adventure meant leaving the Lavender Town behind and going to a new region.

Naturally, Nic chose the more fantastical of the two, and left for the Star Region, eagerly accepting the trials ahead of him. He refused the titles of Breeder, Coordinator, and Trainer; rather he forged a new title: Adventurer. And an adventurer he would be, and Boo would be his partner.
Other: Nic is of both Dutch and Korean descent, hence his name and surname being vastly unalike. Nicolaes is Dutch for Nicholas, and Hwa is a common Korean surname. His father is Koran and his mother, Dutch.
