BENJAMIN • STEPHAN • SMITH
Play By: Dist theRunny Rose of Tales of the Abyss
I think, therefore, I am.
• Labels Do Not Define Me •
Name:
Age: 35
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bi
Status: Civilian; works as an inventor and seller of toys; is going on a vacation of sorts to try his hand at training Pokemon and find some inspiration for new toys.
• On The Outside Looking In •
Hair: White
Eyes: Purple
Scars/Markings: None.
General Appearance: He is somewhat tall, standing at 5 feet, eleven inches. Unlike most males of his age, he is scrawny and thin, often meandering into the "underweight" territory when he spends consecutive days building toys and forgetting to cook dinner for himself. He has very little muscle tone, and has very little hair on his chest.
He likes to wear dark colors, even on hot days. None of his shirts have short sleeves; it feels awkward for him to wear anything that that exposes his pale skin. His wardrobe is full of formal shirts and dress coats and ties, though he has a few casual slacks as well.
His shoes are neat and polished. He never wears slippers, sandals, crocs or anything of that ilk, but dress shoes for all occasions. Granted, he'll have some trouble rock climbing, but he doesn't really mind. He also wears a pair of white gloves.
• There's More Than Meets The Eye •
Likes:
Toys: the electronic ones at least. Anything he can take apart and rebuild or modify.
Dogs: all kinds of dogs. Anything that is willing to bound up and lick his face and play with him and cuddle him.
Kids: ages 5 and up in a fatherly, non-sexual way; the calm kind that don't make large messes and that won't choke on small, electronic bits.
Polite Customers: they are always a nice break from the demanding little children he usually sees.
Playing: he's a kid at heart, and loves to play around. Knows many of the more innocent games that kids like to play, as well as some of the older ones.
Sleeping: he can fall asleep anywhere, even when standing up.
Fixing toys: a worn toy is a sign of one that is well-loved, and fixing one up to face another few years of play makes him happy.
Fréhel (french Musician): he likes to collect her records and play them on an old record player when he's in the mood to draw or cook.
Dislikes:
Rowdy, Rude Kids
Violence
Arsonists
Fire
Broken, Abandoned Toys
Strengths:
Kind: he likes to do good by people, even going so far as to cooking meals for those that can't afford food.
Empathetic: though he isn't always successful, he tries to understand others and where they come from. By putting himself into the shoes of others, he has refrained from slapping multiple rowdy customers.
Brilliant: brilliant when it comes to mechanics, electronics and machines, to be precise. He's invented many toys that have enchanted and delighted children for the ten years that he's been in business.
Patient: some days business runs quite slowly and he has to sit through the silent hours, trying to entertain himself. He often draws or listens to music or plans new machines during this time.
Cheerful: he always acts cheerful and happy, no matter what mood he's in. He makes sure to smile at customers especially, lest he scare them away with a grumpy face.
Weaknesses:
Angsty: he often feels a lot of angst and tends to brood in his room long after the shop has closed.
Lonely: despite his slight popularity with kids, he has been thus far unable to forge any lasting friendships with anyone. He angsts about this often.
Vain: he likes the way he looks and takes special care to keep himself looking trim and clean. He sometimes gets caught up in looking at his reflection in the mirror, fixing his hair or cleaning his face.
Low Self Confidence: despite his vanity, he tends to consider himself as worthless and useless, nothing but a piece of trash that provides temporary entertainment to spoiled brats. He angsts about this almost as often as he angsts about his lack of friends.
Running: he can't run more than a few yards before he's out of breath.
Hard Problems: when a math or engineering problem comes up, he will stay up all night and day trying to solve it, forgetting to eat.
Personality: Benjamin tries his best to be cheerful and happy in front of customers, showing only his kind, caring side. However, he tends to sink into a deep, brooding thought after the shop closes. He is quite shy and introverted, and finds it hard to make --and keep-- friends. He finds joy in small things, like drawing, cooking, fixing toys, watching the stars at night and other romanticized, schmaltzy things like that. The thing that keeps him from going off the deep end is machines: he loves designing and building them. One can see the love and effort he puts into electronics in the toys he sells.

• How I Became Who I Am •
Family: Mother -- Alive
Father -- Breeder -- Alive
Grandfather -- Dead
Grandmother -- Dead
History: Benjamin was raised by two somewhat distant parents. His father was busy with breeding, while his mother worked two jobs to make ends meet. He was a bit of a latchkey kid, cooking his own meals after he came home from school and putting himself to bed. To keep himself from getting bored, he would take his toys apart and rebuild them. By the time he got to high school, he knew how to modify the toys to do things that they would not normally do.
He eventually went to college, majoring in Engineering and minoring in Business. Afterward, he opened his own toy store at the age of 25. It did okay; it wasn't especially successful compared to the larger companies. It was sometimes hard to meet demands since he made all of his toys by hand. One year, someone had the bright idea of burning his shop down. He was able to rebuild the shop within a few months, but the event unsettled him.
A year later, he hired a trusted acquaintance to look over the shop while he went away. It had finally happened: at age 35, he was having a bit of a mid-life crisis and had no new ideas for toys. Perhaps a vacation would let his creative juices flow. With this in mind, he set out toward the nearest Pokemon laboratory to start his short foray into Trainer-dom.
