kiss me goodbye, i'm
defying gravity
(and you won't bring me down)
Name: Riley Jay Walker
Age: 16 (December 31)
Gender: male
Sexuality: heterosexual
Status: trainer
Appearance:
Appearances may sometimes be deceiving, but Riley's certainly isn't. The lighthearted fellow stands on the tall side at 181 centimetres, his head topped with a mess of pale blond hair that sweeps around his face and neck and his eyes coloured a bright sky-blue. His figure is lean, not very muscular and can't stand up to much physical stress, but his posture is nearly always visibly relaxed.
He doesn't need much in terms of style, just a simple shirt and a pair of pants (preferably with large pockets, for the sake of convenience) will satisfy him. Oddly enough, while he's fine with pants of any length, he dislikes wearing long-sleeved tops; anything beyond the elbow and he will either roll up the sleeves or look for something shorter. When asked about this strange preference, he just shrugs and says that it's akin to liking a colour - there's no real reason for it, you just do.
Personality:
[ bold - sociable - easygoing - energetic ]
[ annoying - insensitive - selfish - rebellious ]
Riley's usual demeanor is friendly and playful, albeit a bit immature. He's not afraid to say hello and chat it up with random strangers, but his boldness sometimes gets him in trouble when he says or does something that he's really not supposed to. It's quite difficult to get him riled up about anything; Riley is ridiculously easygoing and doesn't have much of a temper, with a tendency to become depressed rather than angry. To him, insults are hilarious and problems don't matter - even serious affairs such as cruelty and death usually won't provoke much of a reaction from him, to the point where others may perceive him as insensitive and heartless. He can be described as "hyper" but in all the wrong situations; any sign of him having to do hard manual labour and he will immediately become a whiny, lazy slacker and adamantly refuse to do it.
Riley has a bit of an inferiority complex, and purposely driving people up the walls is a favourite pastime of his, though he has difficulty drawing the line between lighthearted teasing and being downright irritating or hurtful. Some people find his extreme affability weird and even a bit suspicious, and wonder if he's trying to hide something underneath that sunny exterior. This is more or less close to the truth; despite outward appearances, he has many nagging self-esteem issues and frequently questions whether or not his life is really worth living. However, he's also extremely dishonest with himself and refuses to face his own problems, and by extension is dishonest with everyone he meets, putting on a mask to hide his depression and hoping that happy-Riley is all they see and all they believe him to be.

History:
Tyler and Winnie Walker: a happily married couple who owned a restaurant in Lilycove City, Hoenn, and who wanted a daughter. A beautiful, quiet, ladylike daughter; the perfect child. They were slightly disappointed when their firstborn popped out as a male, but the family wasn't financially stable enough to raise two babies at once. Young Riley remained an only child for the first six years of his life as the family got their money issues settled, and then became a big brother to the Walker's newborn daughter Alaina.
Alaina was doted on; Riley... not so much. It wasn't as if his parents didn't love him - deep inside, they certainly did with all their hearts - but they never gave him quite as much freedom or choice as his sister, with the reasoning being that he "needed to take over the restaurant and uphold the family name."
He didn't like that.
However, he dealt with his parents' favouritism throughout his teenage years, wrestling with his overwhelming sense of inferiority and the urge to run away from home, and masking his unhappiness with a playful and humourous attitude. He hoped that, if he played the part of a good obedient son and remained cheerful, his parents would finally agree to release him, especially since Alaina had already been given permission to go on a journey when she turned ten.
Unfortunately, it didn't happen. Alaina was happily escorted by her parents to Hoenn's regional Pokémon lab the day after her tenth birthday, while Riley was told to stay in Lilycove and watch over the restaurant. Overcome with frustration, he found his father's wallet which he had left at home and took all of the money inside, using most of it to pay for a ship ticket from Lilycove's harbour to another region. He didn't know where he was going or how his parents would respond, but he didn't care - he was finally going to have his long-overdue journey, whether they wanted him to or not.
Other: He's quite skilled at cooking, from the restaurant training from his parents.
