Jericho sighed with relief. The Sudowoodo fell, and now it was all on Venus to defeat Aerodactyl. He was worried for a long moment that the Sudowoodo survived the hit. Luckily he had put his faith in the right Pokémon. Slowbro did a great job.
“That was pretty good, Kay! I’m glad I brought Slowbro with me now. Your Sudowoodo probably could have really damaged my guys!”
And now, to the task at hand. Aerodactyl was circling high above. What could Venus do to it from here? Even though she was good at ranged combat, that was still quite a distance. He’d have to think fast and wait for it to come in closer. He didn’t like this situation.
The Aerodactyl swooped in, screeching and jaws wide open. He heard Kay’s orders, but had his ears covered. Venus’ ears were flat as well. Would she even hear him? He’d have to try.
“Venus! Use Confusion and Swift! You know the combo!”
She barely heard her trainer, but Venus heard enough to get the message. She shook off the Supersonic, though she did feel a little off balance, and planted herself. She used Swift, causing the star-shaped projectiles to fly forth. Before they could get too far though, she used Confusion to take hold and reshape them. Instead of a steady stream, they formed a circular shield which went right at Aerodactyl. He’d either take the damage from the Swift, and be stopped, or he’d change course, and slow down. Either way, it was good news for Venus as long as he didn’t just bulldoze right through the stars. He was a rock type, it could be possible. But at least he’d be slowed down enough for her to dodge. She shook herself again though, waiting, watching. Jericho didn’t miss the fact that she was, indeed, confused. It just didn’t hit her quite yet.

He was almost there... almost there... so close...
"GACK!" A loud stream of vulgar swear words escaped from Aerodactyl's mouth when the Swift shield popped up unexpectedly in front of him. He hastily tried to divert his course to avoid it, but a turn that sharp was nigh impossible and he only succeeded in colliding sideways with the shield, falling to the ground in an awkward tumble. For the most part, his rock-like body protected him from taking much damage from the actual stars themselves... except for one tiny problem.
His wings.
"I. Hate. You," Aerodactyl growled pointedly at Venus, punctuating each word with a violent flutter of his now scratched-up wings. Sure, he would probably still be able to fly if he tried, but with the wind and dust stinging painfully at the grazes on his sensitive skin, why would he even want to?
It was difficult to see exactly what was happening from the other side of the field, but it wasn't like Aerodactyl at all to remain ground-ridden and vulnerable for more than a couple of seconds if he could help it. Obviously Jericho's strategy had worked a little too well, and Kay finally dropped all formalities and hurried forward, closing the distance between the other gym leader and himself. "Aerodactyl! Are you alright?"
The prehistoric Pokémon tossed his trainer a disbelieving look. "Clearly," he replied sarcastically, holding up his wings.
Kay eyed the scratches with apprehension. If this was an official gym battle, he would certainly go all out and wouldn't be so wont to protect his Pokémon from harm... but as it was just an ordinary, friendly match, it seemed cruel not to give them that option. "Hey... we can stop if-"
"No! Quit spouting your noble shit," Aerodactyl snarled, whipping his head back around to face the Espeon once more; evidently, he wasn't so bothered by the stripped advantage as to give in.
Alright Aerodactyl, point made. "Crunch," Kay commanded quietly, keeping a cautious eye on Venus and wondering if or when she would submit to the effects of Supersonic. Aerodactyl immediately used his legs to launch himself forward, trying once more to trap Venus in his jaws, but his aim was considerably worse due to not being used to moving around on the ground.

Jericho was ecstatic that his Swift shield had worked. That was one of the perks of having a coordinator in the family. It opened you up to a world of possibilities when it came to attacks. Mixing and combining moves into new forms was what contests were all about. Years of watching his father seemed to pay off.
Too bad Venus’ Synchronize ability didn’t work for confusion. She seemed to be falling into the effects of the confusion status. The Aerodactyl barked something Jericho assumed was a swear at his partner, and whereas before she had reacted with a bit of fear, this time she did not.
“Venus? Hey, girl, are you alright?” he called.
No, Venus was not alright. She was seeing double and it was making her dizzy. She stumbled quite a bit as she tried to focus on the Aerodactyl in front of her. He looked especially menacing at the moment, like he was suddenly much bigger than he had been moments ago. She hissed and arched her back.
If Jericho was a swearing man, he would have been swearing right about now. Especially when he saw the Aerodactyl lunge.
“Come on Venus, focus! We’ve almost got this! You need to dodge! Dodge now!”
Venus might have been very dizzy and confused, but she trusted Jericho with her life. She had been raised by him ever since she was a little Eevee pup. It was time to test that bond.
Venus dodged, but not soon enough. Sharp fangs dug into her hind leg, and made her yelp in pain and surprise. Jericho flinched. The pain seemed to be enough to jar her out of confusion though. However, it may not have mattered as she slumped down onto her stomach, her leg still in the jaws of the prehistoric Pokémon.
“Venus!”
She really wasn’t out just yet. Crunch was a dark type move, a move she was weak to, but it was really the first hit she had received in this whole battle. Espeon weren’t known to have high defenses, but one attack wasn’t going to knock her out. Not today.
“Let’s end this! Venus, Psywave now!”
Venus turned to the Aerodactyl with an odd grin on her face. He was so very, very close to her. And he was ground ridden. That meant he wouldn’t be able to dodge. Her eyes began to glow brightly as did the crest on her forehead, and she began to hum a bit as she set out her Psywave attack.

(ooc: Hehe, thanks~ The pair of them are a blast to write xD By the way, can Espeon actually learn Psywave? Bulbapedia may or may not just be wrong, but... o.o And and, apologies for the slow and crappy and unnecessarily long reply; school started for me again and you can probably guess what wonders that does for my free time and my brain. xP)
... Did it actually work? Kay was hardly expecting the reckless attack to land, so he was quite surprised when Aerodactyl's teeth managed to catch the speedy and comparatively healthy Espeon and bring her down. Cold drops of guilt coloured his pride towards Aerodactyl's performance when he saw how the razor-sharp teeth, evolved over thousands of years for shredding prey to pieces, tore into the tender flesh of Venus's leg, but Kay tried to shake the uncomfortable feeling aside. Now was not the time.
Definitely not the time, from Aerodactyl's much lower point of view. He vaguely heard an order from Jericho for Venus to retaliate and as a result was, as his more semantically gifted trainer might say, stuck between a rock and a hard place - either he stubbornly hang on and get a face full of mindscrew (though that was certainly not how Kay would word it) or he give up, let go, and attempt to get out of the way, which would involve admitting that the cat had managed to one-up him.
Like hell he was picking the second one. Aerodactyl raised his head to glare at Venus for a split second, his beady eyes alive with defiance, before the strong psychic wave engulfed him.
"Oh no-"
Kay had not meant for the words to come out in such a constricted voice, or indeed, to come out at all. But even though he knew that dodging was hopeless in this situation and that he was in the presence of an audience - a small one, but an audience nevertheless - he couldn't help but feel upset; battling was something he took extremely seriously, sometimes a little too much, as some outspoken individuals were so wont to inform him.
His fingers fiddled restlessly with the Pokéballs in his pocket, all six of them empty sans Sudowoodo's, as he watched Aerodactyl drop Venus's leg and dig his claws into the dirt, writhing and crying out loudly in a sort of deranged pain; it had never been clearer why psychics' abilities to twist and manipulate the mind could be more dangerous than even the strongest physical force. However, he knew that Aerodactyl still had plenty of willpower in him and would never forgive him if he wasn't allowed to fight until the very end. Kay sighed; that impetuous, bullheaded pride was definitely going to get them both into a lot of trouble someday, he could feel it. But he wanted to give Aerodactyl - and himself - a chance anyway, even though the battle was probably nearing its end by this point.
Now it was simply a question of which approach would keep Aerodactyl conscious longer - not that it really mattered, since the Espeon likely specialised in ranged attacks and would be able to hit him either way. They might as well keep their distance; closing in on her would give valuable time to the opponent to sneak in another attack.
There was only one move in Aerodactyl's arsenal that could hit without making actual physical contact: "Ancientpower... please?"
For a moment, the fossil Pokémon appeared not to have heard over his own screeching - and then Kay realised that he wasn't continuing his racket just because of the Psywave now, but also because he was struggling to do something unfamiliar and unpracticed in his disoriented state. Ancientpower wasn't a move they used often, and this was made obvious as the glowing white, rock-like balls materialised in front of Aerodactyl - much smaller than usual - and then launched themselves rather clumsily in Venus's direction.

Espeon weren’t know for having a lot of defense or HP, and so Jericho got really worried when he saw that Aerodactyl was ready to attack. That Crunch attack was not only a powerful move, but it also had the type advantage. When Aerodactyl let go, Venus jumped back from him, but held her leg up off the ground.
“Are you alright Venus?!” Jericho called, using all his willpower to keep from running over to her.
“Espee!” she looked back at him with a serious look in her big blue eyes. Jericho knew she wanted to continue fighting for him, so he reluctantly nodded.
“Alright then! Let’s go! Swift!”
As the rocks from Aerodactyl’s Ancient Power were hurdled forth, so were Venus’ Swift stars. The two attacks just barely canceled each other out, and Jericho didn’t have to be psychic to tell that both combatants were tiring. Venus was huffing hard and limping on her leg, while Aerodactyl was stuck on the ground.
“Won’t be much longer…” he muttered, “One of them will drop any time now.”
{WC: 177, notes: thank you for calling me on that! I meant PsyBEAM, not Wave! Also, I know my turn is a little short this time, I had little muse =/ }

There was a reason why Aerodactyl preferred tackling and biting his opponents as opposed to chucking Ancientpower attacks at them - not least because it allowed him to get in a little taste when he was otherwise forbidden to eat the other Pokémon. But mostly it was because it took far less energy and was still somewhat effective even when he was exhausted and overall in bad shape.
This was just pathetic. The Ancientpower didn't even touch her. It was those damn stars - this was the second time they had messed up his attack, though he knew full well that if they simply hit him straight on, it would've hardly done a thing. A grudging respect for the strategic human brain crossed his own, still hazy mind as he tried to figure out what to do next.
... Ah, screw thinking, the cat seemed tired enough to Aerodactyl. One more Crunch should bring her down... one more! With an obvious effort, he tried to drag himself across the ground for a final assault, but this simple action proved to be the straw that broke the camel's back. A few centimetres forward was as far as he got before he collapsed to the ground, his rocky armour still damp from Slowbro's earlier Surf, and his brain feeling like a pounding, muddled mess. He refused to open his mouth. The cat and the other guy had no business knowing how weak and tired he was truly feeling.
Aerodactyl may have looked like he fell unconscious, but Kay had owned him long enough to know that it was extremely hard to tell; nonetheless, even Aerodactyl's ridiculous level of tenacity couldn't be enough to force him back to action when he was in this state. The fossil Pokémon was quickly returned to his ball before he could protest or hurt himself even more.
For a few silent moments, Kay stared down at the shiny, innocent Pokéball in his hand, waiting for the disappointment and the bitter aftertaste of losing to subside. Then his eyes flickered up to glance at Jericho with a kind of vague curiosity, just like they did when they first met. How curious it was, less than an hour since they first crossed paths, that this man would strike Kay as someone who could be... well, perhaps not completely trusted just yet... but the rough sketches of what could grow into a warm, long-lasting friendship.
... Was he that desperate for some acceptance?
Perhaps. But he from what he could observe from their short time together, he did like Jericho - someone who seemed friendly and overall enjoyable to be around, even if things could get a bit awkward concerning their conflicting sexualities. He didn't want this encounter to end with the battle, but the possibility of that was quite real; for all he knew, Jericho could be losing interest at the very moment now that the battle had drawn to a close, and then he would leave the city and Kay would be too shy to say anything more than "goodbye" and it would possibly be a long time before they saw each other again owing to the natures of their positions and what if he didn't remember him and he was just another person with no importance in his life -
And then Kay did something that probably surprised himself most of all: he walked forward and gave Jericho a tender and slightly hesitant hug.

{battle over… call it a tie? lol}
So it was over.
Jericho sighed heavily as the Aerodactyl was recalled. That was a real relief. He knew Venus wouldn’t want to stop the battle, so either he’d have to end it, or Kay would. Luckily, Kay did first.
Jericho was really confused though, because most trainers had some kind of external reaction when a battle ended. Venus limped over to Jericho, laying down, waiting for him to make a move. He’s most likely recall her into her pokeball… she hated that thing but she was hurt, so she’d deal. However, Jericho was focused on Kay. He couldn’t see any reaction… but he could feel one. There was a lot of conflict going on there and Jericho didn’t know how to act.
Then, Kay made the first move, which was to hug him. Jericho was shocked, and at first didn’t move. But then he grinned, and hugged the smaller gym leader back.
“That was an awesome battle, Kay.” Jericho said, ending the hug, but not being rude about it at all, “That Aerodactyl of yours is awesome. I’d love to spend more time with you and your Pokémon. Why don’t we make a pit stop at a Pokémon center and take care of our Pokémon, then we’ll go do something else today. Sound like a plan?”
Venus thought so, and was very happy when Jericho gently picked her up rather than recall her into her pokeball. She snuggled into his arms and rested her head on his shoulder. She’d rather be carried than put into that pokeball any day.

(ooc: Haha, I recalled first though, so you win. This time. ;3 && no problem. I seem to be getting slow myself. xP)
Was this really happening? Was Jericho actually returning the hug and not just staring down at him like he was an idiot? Lord knows he had those moments where it felt like he couldn't do anything in front of anyone without looking stupid. It had been a long while since Kay had hugged someone apart from his mother... and that one time when an overexcited challenger tackled him after winning didn't count. That was just painful.
He was quite inclined to agree with Jericho's words, even though "awesome" wasn't exactly the phrasing he would use. Impressive, maybe? Challenging? Worrying? (Admittedly, that last one might have been purely his own fault.)
In any case, Kay was beyond delighted at the other gym leader's friendly offer to spend more time together. "That would be nice," he agreed with a soft smile. Why was he always so wont to understate everything? "So um - right, first things first... the Centre's over there." He promptly set off in the direction of Haven's local Pokémon Centre, not really thinking about where he was going, simply allowing his instincts to guide him; he knew the entire layout of the city by heart, and the location of the Centre, the gym, and his house in particular came naturally to him by now. He didn't need to think about directions anymore.
When Kay glanced back at Jericho, he noticed the very conspicuous addition of Venus in his arms. "Is she always like that?" Kay asked, wondering if Venus had as much of an aversion to Pokéballs as Cubone did, for her posture and demeanor reminded him strongly of his youngest Ground-type. Said Ground-type was no doubt celebrating his freedom and frolicking somewhere in Drenshen Cliffs at that very moment - carefully watched over by his three babysitters, of course. It was a mark of how much Kay trusted his Pokémon, since he knew all too well the incredibly reckless things Cubone could do when left alone.
