Janessa looked in the mirror, and sighed. She had finally realized what she had to do, and there was no stopping her now. She brushed her hair away from her face, and smiled slightly as her reflection did the same. Then she turned away from the mirror and snatched her small backpack off of her bed. Without a second glance around the room, she darted out and slammed the door closed behind her.
"Hey, everyone!" She shouted as she jogged into the kitchen. She grabbed a couple of hot, fresh pancakes from the kitchen table, and then turned to look at her family who had come to see what she was hollering about. "I'm going to the lab now." She announced, before taking a big bite of pancake.
"...What for?" Her father asked, raising an eyebrow. Janessa swallowed her bite of pancake and laughed at everybody's confused expressions- which, in turn, just made them more confused.
"To get my first Pokemon, of course!" She answered with a swish of her free hand in the air. "I can't go on a Pokemon journey and challenge gyms and the Elite Four without Pokemon!" She grinned and shook her head.
"..." Her family said nothing for a couple of minutes. They all just stared at her as she took another bite of her pancake.
"YOU CAN'T JUST DECIDE TO GO ON A POKEMON JOURNEY WITHOUT CONSULTING US!" Her mother finally responded in a roar. Janessa's happy expression melted off her face, leaving a rage-filled death glare in its place.
---
An hour and a half later, Janessa stood in front of the Pokemon Laboratory. She sighed and stared at the front doors as millions of disconnected thoughts ran through her brain. Then, slowly, a smile crept onto her face.
"Here goes nothing!" She hollered to the world, striding confidently up to the door of the Laboratory. She knocked twice and then clasped her hands together in front of her, eagerly waiting for someone to open the door, let her in, and help her start her journey.

It was a brief moment before someone came to answer the door. An older man, his hair starting to turn gray around the ears, and who was dressed in a lab coat was who answered it. He smiled warmly down at the girl, "Well hello," He said, stepping back and opening the door a little wider, "I don't suppose you're here to get your first pokemon, are you?"
Behind him, a good portion of the lab could be seen. Directly in front at the very back of the room sat a rather large desk, covered with papers and empty coffee mugs, and of course a full, fresh and steaming one. To the left was a huge window, which was actually a sliding glass door, that lead out to a great open pasture of green grass, and was clearly where pokemon were let out to play. To the right, an open room that was obviously a lounge, and a set of grand stairs that lead upward. To the right of the desk, at the far back, a large open archway stood, leading into a dark room.
At the desk sat a woman, who glanced up at the sound of the door opening, and took a quick drink of her coffee, "If that's a new trainer, send her back, Allan!" She called, "I've just enough time to get her started before I've an appointment to keep."

Janessa's smile grew as the door opened to reveal an elderly laboratory assistant. "Hi!" She responded eagerly. "Yes, I am here to get my first Pokemon." As she replied, she stepped into the building and looked around. She wanted to say that it was fancier than she had been expecting, but truth be told, she hadn't really had any expectations. Her decision had been too spur-of-the-moment to really develop any particular expectations.
She turned back to the older man and opened her mouth to ask a question, when the woman sitting at her desk called out to them. She gave a friendly smile to the man and nodded her head slightly as a way to say goodbye, and then she turned and strode over to the woman who had summoned her. She was so excited that she nearly broke into a jog, but she managed to control herself.
Janessa grinned happily at the woman and bowed her head slightly in greeting. "Thank you for helping me." She said, offering her hand to the woman for her to shake. "I'm very, very excited. Of course, I suppose that every new trainer who comes through those doors is probably very excited."
It was then that Janessa realized that she really had no idea what Pokemon she wanted. Her mind started working at a million miles a minute as she tried to think of what she might want for a companion. There were so many Pokemon... how could anybody ever choose between them all?

Allan's smile didn't falter as he stepped aside to allow Janessa in. It always made him happy to see how excited new trainers were on their first day. He lifted a hand in a slight wave in response to the girl's nod, and closed the door, before heading off in the direction of the lounge.
Professor Storm glanced up as the girl approached the desk, a smile gracing her lips, "You're very welcome." She responded, rising from her seat in order to shake her hand, before retaking it and lifting her mug of coffee for a quick sip. She sat it back down off to the side, and away from the papers upon her desk, "That they are, but you have a right to be." She said, folding her hands before her and resting them on the desk.
"So my dear, what's your name?" She inquired, raising an eyebrow, "And what type of pokemon would you like today?" She leaned forward as she asked, obviously very curious. She loved to help new owners out with getting their first pokemon, and it always interested her to see who would choose what.

Janessa clasped her hands in front of her, then let go, then clasped them behind her. She couldn't hold still, she was much to fire up and eager and just plain excited to meet her very first Pokemon companion and then hit the road! Reflecting these emotions was a ridiculously huge smile that was plastered haphazardly across her face.
"My name is Janessa Rayya." She answered, "and to be perfectly honest with you, I don't really know what kind of Pokemon I like! I don't really have one favorite type... I want a friendly Pokemon, of course, but I guess that most of the Pokemon that you have here would be friendly, wouldn't they? Well then lets see about types. I think steel is pretty cool, oh and I love flying Pokemon. And oh my goodness, dragon types are all so... so... majestic! Oh, I don't know! There are so many and they're all so great and I just don't know how you could have a favorite type!" Janessa finished her ramble and then took a deep breath. She smiled apologetically at the Professor.
"I'm sorry. I haven't had much time to think about this- I actually just decided this morning that I needed to do this." She tried to explain, and then she shrugged and her normal enthusiastic smile returned.

A quiet chuckle escaped the professor's lips at the girl's inability to remain in one position for long. She truly was excited! That was very common for the woman to see when new trainers arrived, but this girl was even more so than usual. She liked to see that though. It was always a good sign, and it made her confident that she was giving these pokemon to good people who would provide for them.
"Hello Janessa, I'm Professor Storm." The smile on her lips had grown at the girl's outburst of an explanation, "And no worries. Let's see if we can't find someone who interests you." She reached down beside her, and opened a drawer from her desk, which extended out quite a ways. She selected a couple of folders, and pulled them out, opening the first and surveying it, and then the second, "Alright then," She said, closing them and setting them on the counter.
"I have a few suggestions for you, and you can tell me if you like any of them." She smiled, "Skarmory, who is both flying and steel type. Swablu, who is both dragon and flying type. I personally love this pokemon's evolution. Murkrow, who is a flying and dark type. And lastly Starly, who is a flying type." She raised an eyebrow as she finished speaking, "Do either of those sound good?"

Janessa listened very carefully as Professor Storm listed some Pokemon for her. She nodded when the Professor finished speaking, and thought about the choices that had been placed before her. She immediately narrowed it down to Skarmory and Swablu. But deciding between those two was very hard. She bit her lip and clasped her hands in front of her again and stared down at the floor. Then as she made her final decision, she looked back up at the Professor and smiled slightly.
"I would like a Skarmory, please." She informed the Professor with a small nod. "Though I'll have to go find a Swablu later, because I think I would really like one of those as well..." She added. "But for now I think Skarmory is the best choice for me."
Janessa was surprised at how much it felt like a burden had been lifted from her shoulders. A feeling of giddiness welled inside of her stomach as she realized that this really was happening... she really was getting her first Pokemon... and she really was going to go out on an adventure.

Professor Storm waited patiently for Janessa to make her decision. It was a very important one, and although she had a schedule to keep, she would never rush a new trainer in making this choice. At last, the girl came to a decision, and a fine one at that, in the professor's opinion. She absolutely loved Skamory, and was sure that Janessa would too, "Wonderful." She smiled, returning the folders to the drawer and closing it.
"Wait here a moment, please." She turned and made her way back through the archway to her left, and into the room. It was a few moments before she returned, but when she did she had a pokeball and a small bag in hand. She placed the pokeball before the girl on her desk, and the bag beside it, "Skarmory is a male, and is at level five, It currently knows Leer and Peck." She lifted a finger and pointed at the small bag, "Inside there is a small starter kit which includes five pokeballs, five potions, four full heals, one map of Star Region, a berry bag, and a TM case."
She retook her seat, and pulled open a drawer to her left, "What color pokedex would you like?" She inquired, glancing back up at Janessa.

Janessa nodded to Professor Storm as she turned around, presumably to go fetch the Pokemon and the starting items. She felt like she was going to explode from simply standing there, so she began to bounce in place a bit until she saw the Professor coming back.
Janessa grinned and nodded as Professor Storm set the items in front of her and listed them. Then she anxiously snatched them up, putting the items in her backpack and hooking the Skarmory's pokeball to her belt. She already had a name in mind for her new partner: Ganbaatar, which meant 'steel hero'. Gan for short, though, because Ganbaatar was kind of a mouthful.
The Professor's question caught Janessa off guard. Color of Pokedex? She hadn't even noticed that they had come in different colors. She shrugged and replied, "White?"

Professor Storm smiled once more as Janessa excitedly took the items and the pokeball, and stored them safely away. She waited for her answer, and nodded when she received it, pulling from the drawer a pure white pokedex, which she set on the desk before Janessa as she had the other items. She pushed the drawer closed afterward, and quickly picked up her mug of coffee, taking another long sip, before placing the now near empty drink back down on the desk.
"Great! Perfect timing. I still have a couple of minutes to spare before I've places to be." She leaned back in her chair, "Oh, so you know, Swablu have been known to show up in the Shale Meadow just before Reinshaw town, and but more commonly on the Crystal Lake Path before Summer Town." She folded her hands in her lap, "And I think you're all set!"

Janessa's smile grew as Professor Storm advised her on where to find a Swablu. "Thank you so much, Professor!" She said with enthusiasm and honest gratitude. "My Skarmory and I owe you big time." She added with a nod as she picked up the white Pokedex and stuck it in one of her pockets.
"Have a great day, Professor! Thanks again!" Janessa said with a wave before she turned around and walked out of the lab. She was so excited to get this journey started... so excited, in fact, that she sprinted all of the way to the outskirts of Sakura forest. She was running on adrenaline, big time.

The professor smiled, and waved as Janessa took off, "Good luck!" She called, watching until the girl disappeared out the door, before returning her attention to her lab work.
